Only the beginning

"But why, Cissa? A whole weekend, with that child. Now that finally our own child is settled down and we have all the time and the house to ourselves, you agree to watch that child for a weekend. Remember how difficult Draco was at that age? He liked to crawl over our ceilings! And I had to get my broom to get him down from there, since he resisted our magic," Lucius whined as he was getting dressed.

"Oh, don't be a wimp. Our son needs some quality time with his husband. And Scorpius is such a dear. We will be fine. It's not that long ago that we dealt with our own baby; we know what to do. We have Netty who still can help us, if need be," Narcissa replied, while going through the big trunk she had had delivered down from the attic.

"Oh look at this, this was Draco's favourite baby toy. You can still see the bite-marks. Sometimes I wish we had more than just one baby," Narcissa sighed.

"Cissa, please. Remember all the explosions? And the flying food among other things! Never to mention the epic cry-episodes. He was audible through the whole Manor; nowhere was safe from his cry!" Lucius reminded his wife, while he got up, to look over her shoulder. It was then that he spotted something familiar to him: "You even kept his first broom. Now that were good times! He was such a natural talent, of course that was my influence," Lucius took the small broom in his hand, smiling fondly.

"You mean when he was flying all over the house, destroying every vase we owned, and most of the chandeliers? Or when he went head first into the food storage and got to the sweets, and was on epic sugar-highs all night?" Naricssa asked, with a hint of amusement in her voice.

"The all-nighters were bad, though." Lucius winced. "Especially the next day. He was tired, and therefore in such a foul mood all day. I think I started to gain grey hair back then," Lucius said, and combed through his long hair.

"If I remember correctly it was also then, that he started to talk about "Sevelus". Maybe we should have seen it coming." She smiled, as she took out the potion-kit for little wizards.

"Do not remind me. I have heard about Severus this, and Severus that, for more than two decades now, and the fact that I will continue to hear those stories for the foreseeable future does not amuse me," Lucius sighed, as he picked up a small picture of him, Narcissa, Severus and Draco- in which Draco was adoringly looking up to Severus. Maybe they should have noticed something?

"He is happy. After everything that has happened, he is talking to us, leading a happy life and trusting us with his son. Does the rest really matter?" Narcissa asked, smoothing out Draco's first baby gown over her lap.

"If you must put it that way, then no. Even if some of his decisions are not what I would have chosen for him." Lucius sighed once more before he took out a toy snitch, whose wings barely moved anymore after all the 'training' Draco had put it through. "In the end he is a loyal son, and I am proud of him. He also proves that we did something good, besides of course marrying each other."

Narcissa raised an elegant eyebrow, before she decided to let it go. So she grinned at Lucius and said: "So a weekend with baby Scorpius won't be so bad, though I believe he might be a little too young for quidditch."

"Hogwash, nobody is too young for quidditch. I can at least read him some quidditch facts, and great games through the history," Lucius replied in a no-nonsense voice.

"Of course dear."

Narcissa smiled and rolled her eyes at the same time. She had spent too many years with Lucius to be bothered by his obsession with quidditch any longer. And, through the years she had managed to use this obsession quite to her advantage. After all every woman needed some quality time on her own.

"Mistress Narcissa, Master Draco and Master Severus have arrived," an elf told them.

"Thank you, we shall come down immediately," Narcissa replied, and put the toys back in her trunk.

Lucius offer her his hand, to help her up from the floor, and she took it with a small smile: "So we will have a nice weekend, with our grandson?"

"It will be only a weekend, and then we shall once more have the house and our time to ourselves," he answered, putting his arm around her waist, and leaning in to kiss her cheek, before they went downstairs.

"Draco, Severus welcome. And there is the small prince. oh he is looking more and more like you Draco," Narcissa greeted them first.

"Yes, to everybody's relief, the black hair has changed to blond, and so far his nose seems to be fine," Severus said, sounding like the doting father.

"He would have looked good with black hair too, and if his nose will grow out, then you will show him how to wear it with style," Draco interjected with a smile, stroking through his son's hair.

"Draco, what have I told you," Lucius said with a scrunched up face.

"That was hardly flirting!" Draco protested.

"I do believe we have time for tea, before our portkey is supposed to leave," Severus spoke to Narcissa in hopes of stopping father and son from going it, because then they would be pressed for time.

"Right, let us sit down in the emerald parlour." Narcissa grinned before leading the way, with Draco following her and talking about Scorpius' latest achievements.

"Lucius, here." Severus stopped Lucius from following immediately and handed him a small phial. "Two and a half drops each morning, one drop in the night."

"A potion? What does it do?" Lucius looked at the dark-orange liquid, eyebrows raised.

"It is an anti-floating potion. It helped with Draco, and hopefully it shall prevent Scorpius entirely, as I have worked on the formula in recent months once he began showing signs," Severus explained.

"You had such a formula when Draco was still small, and yet you failed to share it with us?"

"Well, you did not ask. And it is not perfect, it wasn't in the past either. I had to deal with your son, with too much energy and too little room to handle it at first. He was not flying but running around the house like a tornado. And the thing is, there are some bad consequences if the child really wants to fly. But so far, Scorpius does not know that he should be able to fly, so I would say you should ne safe. If something should happen however, anything out of the ordinary of course, it would help if you would note it down, so that I might improve on it."

"I wonder, though, how many parents really have to deal with flying children? Do you believe there to be a big market for such a potion?"

"I am not concerned about others. I would like to prevent some of the temper tantrums I had to live through in the past, and I am certain you can empathise with that, because while you are fortunate enough to hide your grey hair in your natural silver. I do not have that luxury, and I do not fancy a salt and pepper look. I would like to age like my mother with dark, black hair until the day I die."

"My dear friend, I believe that my son's vanity is rubbing off on you."

"Don't be ridiculous, my vanity has Regulus and you all written over it," Severus said before he turned with a flair and made his way to the parlour.

"Hmpf" Lucius reacted late, and followed his friend. He would have liked to dismiss Severus' argument, but how to refute the truth?

When they entered the parlour Narcissa and Draco were already sitting at the small table, that held the tea. Draco sat on the emerald fainting couch, while Narcissa took one of the chairs.

"He has grown so much, since we last saw him, so he is doing well?" Narcissa asked while playing with Scorpius on her lap.

"He has a little trouble with his sense of balance, and I fear he is rather slow on the uptake especially when it comes to language, but then Severus tells me I am not to rush him, but... yes, well, he is fine, and healthy, and he got over the first months. The healer yesterday even said that his motor abilities are developing normally, so apparently he has been spared any long lasting effects," Draco answered more thoughtful than the question has warranted.

Narcissa had a small smile on her lips, as she looked down to her grandson. She already was familiar with Draco's bouts of guilt and worry, due to the fact that Scorpius was born too early. But now that her grandson was fine, there was no more reason for those feelings.

"Oh, so you went to the healer before entrusting your son to us?" Narcissa asked with faux suspicion, to defuse the tension.

"Well, mother dear, it is just a precaution, so that we know who we can blame," Draco joined her, gratitude in his smile.

"Lucius did you heard that, our own son does not trust us. I am perfectly scandalised."

"I, on the other hand, am having a flashback to those tea parties you two celebrated. It always seemed like you spoke in your own language back then, too." Lucius sighed again, because he would prefer not to be involved in whatever sort of conversation was going on right now.

"Oh, I remember those. I wonder if I still have the peacock service somewhere. It was so beautiful, and we had so much fun. And Netty always provided the best biscuits," Draco exclaimed, delighted.

"It had the additional benefit of teaching you proper manners." Narcissa nodded gravely.

"Pity, that he seems to forget them rather easily," Severus said with a stern expression.

Draco huffed, though he seemed to calm down, after Severus whispered something in his ear.

Lucius cleared his throat very loudly. He was after all willing to enforce his no-flirting-rule if he must.

"So where are you travelling to?" he asked, after Severus sat down next to Draco.

"Verona, to enjoy good wine and fantastic food, the nice weather and the stunning scenery without rain," Draco said with a smile, and leaned against Severus, putting his empty tea cup down on the small table.

"That sounds like a lovely trip you have planned. You always liked Italy," Narcissa smiled softly.

"Yes, I do. It was such a nice idea of Severus to say we will go there. I am rather excited, as I was not involved in any of the planning, and every time I tried to snoop around, my own son foiled my plans," Draco said, happiness radiating from him.

"If we are not to miss our portkey, we should take our leave," Severus said, and got up to take his son from Narcissa to say his good bye.

Draco then took him from Severus, and for the first time, there was a hint of hesitation before he gave his son to his mother once more.

"You will be fine, but if anything should happen, please contact us," Draco said, sounding worried.

"Draco, Scorpius is not the first child we looked after. No harm will come to him, he will be perfectly fine when you come back to pick him up," Lucius said, and put a hand trustingly on his son's shoulder.

"Right, I know. So, we will be going. Have a nice weekend, we will be back Sunday evening."

After Draco and Severus said their respective good byes to Narcissa and Lucius and where finally gone, the couple sighed in relief.

"Were we like that too, when we left Draco with Severus or the Zabinis?" Narcissa asked.

"My dear, I hate to point it out, but you were sending a letter to Severus after we left there, informing him of Draco's usual eating times, as if he were unaware of that," Lucius said calmly, and poured them both a tumbler of fine whisky.

"Well Severus was a lot younger than we are now back then, and he never raised a child or took care of someone. If it hadn't been for Regulus that man would have spent his entire school time without any friends at all," Narcissa remembered.

"Regulus' death hit him hard though, that's why you took him under your wing in the first place. I myself am still conflicted about him. I like his mind, it is a wondrous thing to see him think or work, and I consider him a loyal friend even after his betrayal. But I loathe his guts, his ability to state the wrong thing in the wrong moment so plainly: it is such a nuisance," Lucius lamented, swirling the whiskey in his glass. "And I do not understand how he managed to fool the Dark Lord the way he did. He was his most trusted servant, Pettigrew was his slave, but the Dark Lord believed he had a connection with Severus, and that man managed to deceive him. It is a feat of his character, but it also makes me worry."

"He is not deceiving Draco, my dear. I asked him, I used his own Veritaserum on him in a moment when he was weak and helpless, and I asked him to make sure. I do not care about all the others, but I know that our son is safe with him, and loved by him. That is enough for me, and it will have to be enough for you," Narcissa stated, voice firm.
"Now, we have this cute baby, and a weekend to make him a little more difficult for his parents to handle, where shall we start?"

"Finally that weekend is over and that devil is home with his parents." Lucius sunk back in his high back chair, having just handed back their grandchild to its parents and nearly shoved them out of their home. A weekend with a small child was nothing the elder Malfoys were used to anymore.

"How are they able to deal with that child each day? Draco was not near this bad, and he was bad, though I loath to admit it. I am after all his mother. Well, at least Scorpius doesn't cry that much. But his hiding is worse. Netty gave me a shock when she fired up the oven, as the wood was stacked up to look like Scorpius," Narcissa said falling gracefully back on the fainting couch.

"And his tendency to hide in the furniture really was not helpful. I am sure we have no clue what rooms he was in all the time. He crawls so fast for such a small child." Lucius complained.

"Do you think they will notice that there is hair missing on the right side of his head? Because if they do, they might never entrust us with Scorpius again."

"I am not sure I want to look after that child again, at least until it becomes of proper flying age." Lucius took a swig of his drink.

"He did not fly away, that was helpful too, though really, I fear without Severus' potion the situation would have been worse. Also, the next time they come over, we will hide the silverware. Silverware is not a proper toy, no matter how much Scorpius can make them dance! I also think our tapestries in the upper floors will need some heavy repairing," Narcissa replied.

"I was astonished at your quickness with the safety charms my dear, because otherwise we would have needed a healer. And I guess he had fun, he was laughing a lot, even with his parents gone. So, we did alright," Lucius said, awarding them some points in child-rearing.

"We did, dear, though no weekend stay overs until Scorpius can speak and understand properly. Babies are too exhausting for my age."

"Cissa, dear, are you meaning to tell me that you are getting old?" Lucius teased.

"If I remember correctly, it was not me, last night calling for help because I was unable to put him to sleep," Narcissa shot back.

"Well... let's not speak of the past, I am wondering about the future, and I think we need to invite ourselves to a stay over at our son's house. I want to see Scorpius playing them for fools, like he did with us. That boy will be up to no good long before he is sorted into Slytherin. And they call him angel, and little pumpkin, as if he is a good child. I wonder if they are ignorant by desire, or blended by that little devil's smiles," Lucius complained.

"He was well behaved when his parents returned. He never even crawl- oh that man! I will avenge us, we will go and buy Scorpius the most obnoxious toys we are able to find." Narcissa suddenly shot up.

"Love, I am exhausted and unable to follow you, what are you talking about?"

"A leash charm! Most likely a permanent one, on one of them. Scorpius never crawled out of a certain radius from them. They knew, but didn't warn us!"

"I see." Lucius nodded. "That just means we have to become more doting grandparents. And after all, we managed to show him, how to make things fly." Lucius grinned.

"Yes, yes, we did, and I know a fabulous toy maker in Paris, who will be able to come up with some very loud toys, which can become invisible. After all Scorpius is an only child that can be very lonesome," Narcissa answered with a satisfied grin. "Don't you think that a white, long-hair kneezle is the perfect birthday gift for our cute grandson. I especially remember Severus' fondness for these animals."

"I admire the way you think my dear. So while this battle might be lost, the war has only just began. We have about sixteen years for our revenge to come to fruition," Lucius relaxed some more.

"Sixteen years? Darling, I am a Black, and his closest female relation, we have got about eighteen years, and some very nice potential- brides-to be to come. I am not to be outdone by my own son!" Narcissa said with conviction, and Lucius could only laugh, while at the same time hoping he had been able to teach Draco good survival skills.

Oh, MA!!! This was the perfect thing to wake up to. No worries about your other work, this was just perfect.

Lucius and Narcissa discussing Draco’s childhood was so perfect—he’d 100% have been a little devil. And the minor Severus/Draco made me grin so much!! I can only imagine the trouble they have with Scorpius at home.

Lucius having a no-flirting rule is hilarious, and I really loved this exchange:

”Oh, so you went to the healer before entrusting your son to us?" Narcissa asked with faux suspicion, to defuse the tension.

"Well, mother dear, it is just a precaution, so that we know who we can blame," Draco joined her, gratitude in his smile.

"Lucius, did you heard that, our own son does not trust us. I am perfectly scandalised."

I’ve always loved the idea of Draco being an involved/almost overbearing father, and seeing his worry over Scorpius was so cute. And Lucius and Narcissa being protective over Draco is just as good!!

The recount of their babysitting and two of them conspiring to make Severus and Draco’s lives a living hell was hilariously in character. I’m sure Narcissa will eventually win that war.

Thank you so much, MA!! I loved it.

...I now want to read about Severus' reaction to the kneezle! :D

This is so cute!
